Bannister wins 10K Butte Challege

HERMISTON Cliff Banister paced the field Saturday at the second annual Butte Challenge in Hermiston, covering the 10 kilometer course in 35 minutes, 50.1 seconds.
Sean Williams, who won the 5K run in a time of 17:01.3 and Sue Brooks, who won the 5K walk in a time of 40:42.5 also claimed wins in the event.
Banister was followed by Joe Dodman at 36:36 and Chris Behrens at 37:49 in the 10K run. Troy Blackburn was fourth with a time of 39:13 and Harold Shepherd was fifth at 40:30. Jill Banister posted a time of 40:33 to place sixth and Timothy Legue was seventh at 41:17. Alex Blackburn (42:22), Joe Delgado (43:56) and Pat Maney rounded out the top 10.
Williams finished well ahead of the pack in the 5K run as Juan Sanchez placed second at 19:18. Jake Osborne placed third with a 21:04 and Cory Winker was fourth at 21:18. Chad Blackburn was fifth at 21:28, John Spomer was sixth at 21:42, Doug DeBok was seventh at 22:02 and Bart Maney placed eighth in the 5K run field with a time of 22:12. Melody Sanchez, at 22:36 and Tyson Blackburn at 22:49, placed ninth and 10th while Venus Nguyen was 11th at 22:53.
In the 5K walk, Zo Fritts was second only to Brooks with a time of 41:18. In third place was Donald Carson at 41:28. Stephanie Behrens was fourth at 46:25, Sandra Fitfield fifth at 50:10, Wendy Hickman was sixth at 50:51.8, Sannon Ternes was seventh at 50:52, Patti Perkins was eighth at 51:23, Kathy Otnes was 51:24 and David Otnes was 10th with a time of 51:32.
