HERMISTON A womans good deed has triggered Hermistons U.S. Postmaster to investigate allegations of racism. Meanwhile, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People may be called in on the case.

Carmel Foster-Arevalo is waiting for two official words Im sorry from the post office, but says she wonders if she will ever hear them. Her story began at the eye doctors office on Aug. 22, when she accidentally picked up the wrong datekeeper. Inside the book she found $9,000.

When I took out a bill, I thought is was a one dollar bill, and then I looked and it was a one hundred dollar bill, she said.

Perhaps some people would have called that good luck and kept the money, but she returned to the eye doctor to return the items. That was the beginning of a bad week. (For the full story, please see the Sept. 11, 2001 issue of the Hermiston Herald.)
