HERMISTON A Hermiston woman is grieving since she learned that her brother, Lt. Col. Michael Selves, is presumed dead in Tuesdays attack on the Pentagon.

Selves, the brother of Karen Hart of Hermiston, was a 1965 graduate of Pendleton High School.

Sunday was especially hard on the family, as it would have been his birthday. The family observed the day by attending church at Hermiston Christian Center. Selves would have been 54.

Selves retired from the Army in 1989, but was then re-hired as a civilian for the same job he had performed in the Army, as director of information management. According to Hart, there were only two other people between Selves and the secretary of the Army. His office was in the part of the Pentagon that was hardest hit, Hart said. Although officially he is still unaccounted for, his area was the most devastated and would be the last area they would be able to get to, Hart was told.
