While Umatilla Landing Days will be offering plenty of fun things for people to do, the Umatilla Sage Riders will offer a little more at the arena along Highway 395 in Power City.
In conjunction with Landing Days, the horse riders organization is holding its annual play day starting at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 27.
Signups for those wishing to participate in the events starts at 11 a.m.
“The last couple of years we have done it with Landing Days because we’re part of the community,”?said Kerri Deal, Play Day organizer.
Also, the group hopes that having the two events together will draw more people to the events.
“We see this as part of our contribution,” she said.
Planned for the event are several activities both horse- related and non-horse related.
“We have a stick horse race with an obstacle course, a boot race and dummy roping,” Deal said.
The dummy roping involves trying to rope a fake steer. In all of the events first through sixth place winners are awarded ribbons and are broken down by age groups.
In the horse-related activities, groups ages eight and under, nine-12, 13-17, 18-59 and 60+ will have three to five events to participate in.
“We have a leadline arena for the kids (eight and under) still learning to ride with three events,” Deal said.
Entry fees for leadline events are $3.
Other age groups entry fees are $5 each or $20 for all five.
The three events include barrel racing, single stake racing, and a figure eight ride. The older age groups have the same events plus keyhole and pole bending.
“We have something for everyone and all events are timed,” Deal said, adding winners receive ribbons and horse-related prizes except for in leadline, which will just receive ribbons.
The play day also has one of its more crowd pleasing events, one that Deal said people recommend the group brings back for all of their play days.
“We’re also doing a hide race, which is a team event of either a parent-child, two children 18 and under, or a male and female,” she said. “It’s fun to watch.”
Sign ups for the hide race are $10 per team.
There will be other attractions at the play day as well with vendors selling western tack, art, novelties and other items. Vendors interested in participating must bring their own tables, canopies or other equipment with a $25 donation required.
Donations go to help fund awards and prizes given at the event.
Deal said the group puts on several play days but this will be the first time they’ve put on one at the same time in consecutive years.
“We’re hoping to make it a continuing tradition,” she said.
She added the attendance continues to grow as word of mouth about the shows gets out and they are always willing to listen to feedback from those who attend to make the shows better.
