The Umatilla School Board put their stamp of approval on the district’s $20 million budget for the next fiscal year at its regular business meeting June 11.
The budget breakdown is $13.2 million to the general fund, $2.8 million to special revenue funds, which include instruction, support services, facilities acquisition, enterprise and community services.
The board approved $1.3 million for long term debt service and $2.4 million for capital project funds. District property owners will pay $4.9224 per $1,000 of assessed value of their property.
The board also approved two stimulus grants from the federal and state government in the amount of $415,227. The School Day Restoration Fund from the state gave $128,281 to the district and the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund from the federal government gave the district an additional $287,000. The approximately $415,000 was appropriated into the district’s instruction fund.
In other business, the board approved the high school, middle school and elementary school handbooks as well as the athletic handbook. The handbooks are nearly identical to the previous year’s handbooks with a few changes to make the rules more equitable.
The board also declared an old oven at McNary Heights Elementary School to be surplus. A new oven has been ordered and is being paid for by a grant Food Services manager Guy Jager received.
Board member Bob Wimberly was presented with a golden apple for his contributions to the board. Wimberly did not seek re-election, keeping his campaign promise to only stay on the board for a short time. Wimberly said that for the first time in his education career, he was speechless.
Guy Jager reported on the summer food service program. Jager said the program would start June 15 and go through July 31.
Breakfast will be served at 7:45-8:45 a.m., lunch at 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and an afternoon snack at Clara Brownell Middle School Monday-Friday. Lunch will also be served from 11-11:45 a.m. at the Marina Park and the Umatilla Baptist Church, 146 Columbia Blvd., in Umatilla.
Jager hopes to serve at least 50-90 kids this summer.
“It’s not just for kids in the community,” Jager said. “Anyone driving through town can send their kids down to have lunch.”
Children must be between the ages of 1 and 18 years of age to attend the meals. The meals are free and income qualifications do not apply.
