The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has scheduled its first Eagle Watch for Saturday, Feb. 5 from 1-4 p.m. at The Dalles Dam Visitor Center.
Corps employees will make spotting scopes and binoculars available in the visitor center parking lot for viewing of American bald eagles along the Columbia River. The viewing aids will help visitors to see the eagles roosting at Westrick Park, at the west end of the powerhouse across the river from the visitor center.
The event is free to the public and accessible to visitors with disabilities. Scott Clemans of the Corps of Engineers encouraged visitors to bring their own scopes, binoculars and cameras. Hot chocolate and a blazing bonfire will keep guests warm, he said.
Also Feb. 5, The Dalles Discovery Center will present a live raptor program at 1:30 p.m. It will include live birds and a bald eagle costume for kids to try on. The birds and costume will be on hand throughout the event.
A Corps park ranger will present Birds of the Columbia Gorge at 2:30 p.m., discussing bird adaptations and how to use a field guide. The program includes a hands-on activity.
The Dalles Dam Visitor Center and Seufert Park are just north of Interstate 84 at Exit 87. Turn east onto Brett Clodfelter Way and follow the road to the visitor center
