When Hermiston and Pendleton traditionally meet on the wrestling mat, its usually reserved for the league dual except this time.
The two rivals met in the Class 5A finals at the Oregon Wrestling Classic on Saturday in Redmond, with the Dawgs winning 47-20.
As most expected them to, Hermiston rumbled through its division, averaging 50.4 points per dual while allowing just 17.
In Fridays pool play round, Hermiston had to wrestle just twice after receiving a bye. They took care of Silverton, 51-19, and Sherwood, 64-9. The wins gave the Dawgs the No. 1 seed out of the pool and into the bracket round.
Fellow Columbia River Conference member Hood River Valley had it shot at the Dawgs, but like all the teams Hermiston wrestled, they didnt stand much of a chance. Hermiston dispatched the Eagles 45-16 in the quarterfinals before thumping Sandy, 45-21, in the semifinals.
In Class 3A, Riverside ran the table in pool play, but stumbled in the quarterfinal match, losing to Willamina, 45-33. The loss dropped them into the bonus round with all the third-place finishers in pool play, and the Pirates handled Sheridan rather easily, 48-23.
In pool competition, Riverside dominated with three huge victories. They opened the tournament by beating Lakeview 49-27 and clobbered Santiam Christian 63-18. The Pirates ended pool play with a 54-30 win over Illinois Valley.
Hermiston will have a home dual with The Dalles-Wahtonka at 7 p.m. Thursday, followed by the Bretthauer Oil Invitational at Hillsboro High School on Saturday. The Pirates will hit the road this weekend, heading to Tillamook on Friday and Gervais on Saturday.
