- Crews from Chervenell Construction continue demolition work on the former West Park Elementary on Wednesday. The red roofs and gymnasium of the new school are visible behind the demolition site.
With the drone of machinery and crunch of collapsing concrete, the walls began coming down at the old West Park Elementary on Tuesday morning.
By Wednesday afternoon, as backpack-laden students made their way past former classrooms, the end of the building had come down and workers were busy filling dumpsters and piling materials.
Although progress in the demolition was easily visible by Wednesday, Kyle Clark, project manager for Chervenell Construction, said completely removing West Park will take about five weeks.
The first piece of the building is coming down were going to use large track hoes and a concrete crusher and it should take about five weeks, he said. Ive had some take more and some take less; it all depends on the size of the building.
The 60-year-old school on Seventh Street is being demolished to make way for bus lanes and parking at the new West Park Elementary nearby.
Classes began in the new facility Jan. 4, and until the bus lot is completed, parents and school busses will use the same parking lot to pick up and drop off students.
