The Hermiston softball team worked out a 2-2 record at the Rex Putnam Spring Break Classic softball tournament, held March 22-23 at Hood View Park in Clackamas.
The squad beat Grant in the opening game Monday, 3-2, and lost in an 11-10 slugfest to McMinnville to cap the first day of competition.
Hanna Findley, the lone senior on the ballclub, and Maloree Moss each had three hits against McMinnville while Cheyenne Lawson had two.
They came back Tuesday and faced one of the best pitchers in Class 5A, Putnams Breann Morrison, and lost, 4-2. They took out a little frustration on Milwaukie in the finale to hammer the Mustangs, 10-1.
Against the Mustangs, hurlers Rhogyn Reece and Megann Galloway combined for a no-hitter. Fielding was a bit of an issue for the Dawgs, however, as they committed five errors in the game.
Galloway picked up the decision, entering the circle in the third inning and throwing the remainder of the game in relief of Reece, who earned the win against Grant.
She used the three runs her offense scored in the first inning and didnt allow a run afterward. Galloway earned credit for a save in a game that ended up being six innings due to the tournament time limit.
Paige Long, while taking the loss against Putnam, threw the best her best game of the year, Bequette said. She went the distance and scattered seven hits.
The Dawgs (6-2) rattled the bats for 41 hits over the 4-game set, but Morrison held the potent offensive attack to five hits. Sophomore Mykel Liebe smacked three of five hits off Morrison.
Junior catcher Courtney Howard finished the tournament with a pair of doubles.
Hermiston head coach Tom Bequette said he wanted his team to leave the tournament a better team than they were before, and he felt the team was able to do that.
The results of the Friday doubleheader with Kennewick were not available by the Heralds press deadline. A full recap of the games will be in Wednesdays issue.
