William Walter Bill Newell Sanders, 83, of Hermiston died Monday, March 21, 2011, at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 26 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 850 W. Highland Ave., Hermiston, with viewing at 10 a.m. and a chapel service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Hermiston Cemetery.
Mr. Sanders was born Nov. 16, 1927, in Yerington, Nev., to Arvilla Bernice Wangsgard and Walter Isador Newell. When he was six weeks old his father Walter died, and his mother later married Herbert Sanders in Elgin. He attended schools in Elgin, Oakland, Calif., and Harper, Ore. He served as a staff sergeant in the Army infantry during World War II.
After his honorable discharge and return home his family moved to Nyssa, where he met his wife, Janice Campbell. They were married in Idaho Falls, Idaho in 1950. He began a career in banking, but his real interest was in building. He spent a long career as a carpenter working throughout the Northwest and in Las Vegas, Nev. After retiring in 1992 he and Janice moved to Hermiston.
Mr. Sanders is survived by his wife, Janice Sanders of Hermiston; daughters Pamela Houghton of Salem and LeAnn Fink of Henderson, Nev.; sons Mark Sanders of Las Vegas, Nev., Brent Sanders of Salem, Jeffery Sanders of Hermiston, Phillip Sanders of Henderson, Nev., Eric Sanders of Middleton, Idaho, and Kelly Sanders of Bonney Lake, Wash.; brothers Joe Sanders of Forest Grove, Jim Sanders of Hurricane, Utah, George Sanders of S. Jordan, Utah, and David Sanders of Oregon City; sisters Arvilla Moore of Clackamas, Barbara Bishop of Spanish Fork, Utah, Olga Whitaker of Vale, Virginia Wetzel of Henriville, Utah, and Christine Hart of Springville, Utah; 37 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Genevieve Heil, Arthur Sanders, Nadene Banyon, Robert Sanders, John Sanders and Elsa Woodland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Fund in care of of the church.
