Jennie Martin

Jennie Remita Martin, 89, died Saturday, June 4, 2011, at her daughters home in Stanfield. A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 11 at 12:30 p.m. at the Echo Memorial Cemetery in Echo. A gathering will follow at the Stanfield Baptist Church, 310 E. Wheeler Ave.

Mrs. Martin was born Nov. 10, 1921, in  Little Big Goose Creek outside Sheridan, Wyo. She moved to Tacoma, Wash., in 1940 shortly after graduating from Johnson County High School in Buffalo, Wyo., to live with family and friends.

In 1942 she went to work at Carstens Meat Co. in Tacoma. She was featured in a full-page Life Magazine story about women doing the work of men called to duty in World War II.

In Tacoma she met her soon-to-be husband of nearly 68 years, Paul Martin. She and Paul were married in 1943 prior to Pauls deployment in World War II. She became a housewife and mother after Pauls return to Tacoma. They lived the latter  years of life in Hermiston.

Mrs. Martin is survived by sons Jack, Dennis and David; daughter Paula Otzenberger; brother Dale Wilson; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband Paul on April 26, 2011; parents Marion and Robert Wilson; brother Joe; and sisters Doris and Norma.
