The Hermiston Spuds AAA American Legion baseball team laid a pair of poundings on the Moses Lake Walleyes, 11-1 and 16-6, Tuesday at Weber Field.

The Spuds couldnt be contained at the plate with 29 hits over the twinbill that led to 27 runs.

In the opener, however, it was the pitching of Quin Grogan that was most impressive. He gave up one run on two hits and struck out nine batters in a complete-game performance.

Both games were shortened to five innings due to run differential, and Spuds assistant coach Aaron Davis said he was pretty pleased with the result.

It was nice to get the wins in the fashion we did, he said. We hit the ball around the field, and hit it hard.

Something Davis said he hadnt seen in quite some time was the club not commit an error.

While the defense played fantastic in the first game and went error-free, which hasnt been the case for a good part of the year.

To have no errors is outstanding for us, Davis said. Whenever we have errors, it ends up costing us and usually leads to runs.

Grogan and Jeremy Holden hit doubles for the Spuds while Cam Day went 2 for 3 and scored three runs.

Devin Bailey, Jacob Almaguer and Holden each went 2 for 4 at the plate.

In the nightcap, the hits kept coming for the Spuds as they slapped 17 base-knocks. They plated six runs in the second inning and followed that up with five in the third.

Camran Pollick gave up a pair of 3-run homers in the early portions, but had a big enough lead to work with it didnt really matter. He pitched three innings to earn the win in the five-inning contest.

Tate Gabriel blasted a 3-run homer for the Spuds while Pollick and Holden both tripled.

Almaguer and Harley Orcutt both hit doubles and Day had another great game at the plate with a 3 for 3 performance.

The Spuds hosted the Milton-Freewater Blazers on Friday, but results were unavailable by the Heralds presstime.

After that, they have the holiday weekend off before taking on Burbank, Wash., at 2 p.m. July 6 in Burbank.
