Harold V. Scouten

HERMISTON Harold Vernon Scouten, 93, of Hermiston died Monday, July 4, 2011, at Sun Terrace Assisted Living Facility in Hermiston. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, July 8 at 11 a.m. at the Quincy Cemetery in Quincy, Wash. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 9 at 11 a.m. at Oasis of Hope Church in Hermiston.

Mr. Scouten was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Carpenter, S.D., to Raymond and Bertha (Nelsen) Scouten. He was raised in Carpenter and moved to Clark, S.D., in high school, graduating from Clark High School. He then worked for his uncle in the state of South Dakota Treasurers Office in Pierre. In 1940 he married Maxine Violet Smith in Clark. 

The Scoutens lived in Redfield, S.D., before moving to Bremerton, Wash., where he worked in the shipyards during World War II. He also worked for the Bremerton School District as a bookkeeper. He then started working stocking shelves for a grocery store at night and eventually worked as a checker, assistant manager, and finally manger of that store. He moved to Quincy, Wash., where he owned and operated four Thriftway supermarkets. 

Mr. Scouten is survived by his wife of 71 years, Maxine Scouten of Hermiston; daughter Sandra Werner of Hermiston; son Jan Scouten of Phoenix, Ariz.; half-sister Pat Hirtzel of Huron, S.D.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Bertha Scouten; brothers Larry Hansch and Lyle Scouten; and sister Evelyn Bell.
