Wednesday evening, two Hermiston residents were arrested at the Macys at the Columbia Center Mall in Kennewick for allegedly stealing property from the store. One of the suspects in that incident attempted to escape and was subdued by Kennewick police with a taser.
Upon arrival at the Macys store, officers were told by employees that 36-year-old Martin Maher and 21-year-old Ofelia Ramirez allegedly took items from the store before running out on foot.
Ramirez was captured by a store employee and turned over to police, but Maher attempted to outrun officers. He was attempting to run back inside the mall when he was tazed for failing to comply with officers. He was not injured.
Officers then determined that additional stolen property had already been placed in their vehicle, and the vehicle was impounded as evidence pending application of a search warrant.
Maher was booked in the Benton County Jail for retail theft and resisting arrest. Ramirez was booked on an outstanding warrant and possession of marijuana and methamphetamine. Other charges against the pair are still possible.
