Oregon State Police Sgt. Sterling Hall stood in front of a classroom of middle school students on Friday and spoke about the different careers available in law enforcement and the training necessary. Then he opened the floor up for questions.
Have you ever been shot? was the first question asked.
No, but a friend of mine was, Hall said, telling the story.
At the end of the presentation, he asked the students how many would consider a career in law enforcement, and most of the hands went up.
Hall was one of 22 professionals involved in Armand Larive Middle Schools Career Choices Day on Friday. Most of the visitors came from fields outside of education, including information technology, law enforcement weather service, insurance, catering, media, the Corps of Engineers, Union Pacific Railroad or Umatilla County District Attorney Dan Primus.
A few speakers, however, were more familiar to students, such as Todd Sprong, physical education teacher who spoke about his other job as a golf pro.
I probably have the best dual career you can have. (Career Day) is always fun because I get to promote it, he said. There are so many avenues in this job that people dont really think of, and I get to talk about it.
Members of Armand Larives leadership group escorted the visitors around the school. The students were able to select which professional they wanted to work with during the day.
We each got to choose a person to work with that we were interested in, sixth-grader Alyssa Green said. That makes it fun.
Adrianna Rodriguez agreed.
I think its really cool because you get to meet people and see what jobs are available, she said. Its a good day.
