Stanfield punches ticket to 2A tourney site

To earn its third-straight trip to the Class 2A state boys basketball tournament, Stanfield dialed long distance.

The Tigers hung up 14 3-pointers on the Oakridge Warriors in a 77-59 win Saturday in Stanfield.

While Oakridge had a rather obvious size advantage, and would have had one even if Stanfield forward Koty Kamm was available, Stanfield shot 44 percent from beyond the arch and had huge nights from guards Devin Bailey and Bryce Linker.

Bailey scores a game-high 28 points with five longballs while Linker ripped the net for 20. Eddy Ramos chimed in with 19 to help the Tigers run away with the win.

The win put Stanfield in the 1:30 p.m. game in the opening round of the Class 2A tournament Thursday at the Pendleton Convetion Center against No. 1 East Linn Christian Academy.

ELC, located in Lebanon, is a team built for a postseason run with size, speed and a battle-tested swagger.

They won the Tri-River Conference championship with a resounding 60-38 win against Regis a team that beat the Eagles twice before and pummeled Gold Beach in the first round, 73-30, to get to Pendleton.

Theres no doubt why the Eagles are a prohibitive favorite to end up playing for the big trophy on Saturday with 6-foot-7 Austin Bates roaming the paint and guards Jake Bates and Chaz Hooley handling the ball.

Sophomore guard Cole Horner is also a factor in the Eagles offense that Stanfield will have to account for.

In short, ELC is solid at every position and will be a handful for the Tigers.

However, the Tigers will definitely have a home-crowd advantage and if they keep shooting the ball like they did against Oakridge, they can beat anyone.

The Tri-River Conference is sending four teams to the Pendleton Convention Center, so half the tournament field is coming from the same conference. Regis, Central Linn and defending champ Western Mennonite will compete in Pendleton.

Listen to the Tigers game against ELC on AM 1360 KOHU. The OSAA Radio Network will provide the broadcast, which begins at 1:25 p.m. with the pregame show.
