Youth drug prevention expert coming to Hermiston
Published 2:41 pm Saturday, September 1, 2012
One tall police officer will stop in Hermiston this month, but he wont be on duty.
Boise Police Officer Jermaine Galloway, dubbed The Tall Cop because of his 68 stature, will give a free presentation from 1-5 p.m. Sept. 14 at Good Shepherd Medical Center.
Galloway travels across the Pacific Northwest with his program, designed to reduce youth alcohol and drug abuse through giving adults tools to work with prevention, education and enforcement.
While in Hermiston, Galloway will meet with area law enforcement and host a free presentation for members of the public, including parents, educators and other interested adults.
The interactive class focuses on youth issues such as synthetic drugs, clothing and logos worn by youth drug users and abusers and over the counter drug use, as well as drug paraphernalia, concealment and identification.
Hermiston Police Officer Erica Franz said the class will give adults a lot to think about.
Hes trying to teach people to recognize these things and share them with others. Youre going to come out of this class with holy moly, I didnt know that, Franz said. Im excited to see it in person.
Because of the length of the course, a free meal will be provided for all pre-registered participants. The program is sponsored by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Safe Communities Coalition and Good Shepherd Medical Center.
