More than 4,000 people visited Hermiston High School on Saturday to take part in hundreds of activities at the fourth annual Family Health & Fitness Day.
The annual event sponsored by Good Shepherd Medical Center and the Good Shepherd Community Health Foundation brought hundreds of activities to the high school, all free and geared toward health, safety and wellness. The event kicked off with a family bike ride, and once they arrived at the campus, visitors of all ages could participate in health and dental screenings, climb a towering rock wall or seek treatment for an injured teddy bear.
Organizer Juli Gregory said she works with a committee of about 15 people to run the event each year.
They began working on this heavily in January, she said. Its hard to find the words to adequately say thank you to that group of people.
In addition to the Family Health & Fitness Day committee, about 200 volunteers help out at the event, including interpreters, middle and high school students and Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services personnel, who helped set up and take down the event.
It was so much bigger this year. All the games, all the food, getting everything ready, it takes an entire team, Gregory said.
The response from Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services helping us Friday and Saturday, setting things up and taking them down, I dont have words to say how much help that was and how much that meant. Their response was incredible, Gregory added.
Participants evaluations show two common favorites the returning Teddy Bear Clinic and a new display, GSMCs Da Vinci robot-assisted surgery system as well as a number of other positives.
Gregory said the committee will begin meeting Thursday to reflect on Saturdays event and begin working toward next year.
