Two local businesses are expanding their walls and adding more services while a new store is set to open this month, all along Highway 395 in Hermiston.

At 1995 S. Highway 395, Hermiston Veterinary Clinic is adding 1,600 square feet, according to Joni Anderson, office manager at the clinic.

Construction started in June and is expected to be complete by January 2013, according to Anderson.

Were just outgrowing our facility, Anderson said. Everyone shares our excitement of seeing the growth and change.

Sharon Hufman and her miniature 9-year-old Australian Shepherd, Tillie, visited the clinic Friday morning. Hufman frequents the clinic several times a year and spoke positively about the construction. She said it has been an easy transition with construction and parking for the facility has been well-marked along Highway 395.

I wonder what all the changes will be, she said.

Two new exam rooms are expected at the facility, bringing a possibility for more four-legged patients, and the facilitys lobby and retail area is also set for expansion.

The clinic, which has five veterinarians, continues to take patients as construction continues.

We want to keep everyone getting in and out within a timely manner, Anderson said.

Just down the road, at 1823 S. Highway 395, Bellinger Farms and Gourmet Shoppe is also in the middle of an expansion.

Owners Donna and Jack Bellinger are adding a bistro to the local produce and specialty store. The 2,000-square-foot of additional space will provide for more seating, which is lacking in the current set-up, Donna Bellinger said Friday.

She said the bistro will still be counter service with a gas fireplace to set  the mood and the option of outdoor dining.

Bellinger said she began working to add a food service area to the store six years ago, but she wanted to offer something to set Bellingers apart.

Im an east-coaster, from Massachusetts, so I decided to go with something different like bagels, she said. This is an opportunity to expand our business and compartmentalize the food side.

Bagel sandwiches, ice cream and espresso are served in the store, but The Bistro at Bellinger Farms will also serve soups, salads as well as beer and wine by the glass, Bellinger said. The bistro should be open by December 2012 or early 2013. Store hours are expected to stay the same: Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We may want to tweak the hours to accommodate popularity and business, she said.

Wednesday, the south wall, which separates the expansion from the store now, will come down, Bellinger said, and during construction the bagel menu will be limited from the normal specialty sandwiches.

Drivers heading north of Bellingers and the veterinary facility have likely also noticed a coffee business brewing along Highway 395.

Construction has begun on Dutch Bros. Coffee at the corner of East Jennie Avenue and Highway 395. Owner Marc Lee said in late August the coffee stand is slated to open by early November. Lee also owns a Dutch Bros. coffee stand in La Grande.
