Breadsticks from scratch and gluten-free pizza and are only a few of the samplings from a Umatilla business.
At Freestyle Pizza, 1226 Sixth St., owner Bill Conant said the store is focused on a fresh ingredients and a family-atmosphere.
Were an old-fashioned pizza parlor, but people have forgotten what that is, Conant said. All weve done is go back 30 years.
From the hand-painted skateboarder on the outside to the classic red-and-black interior, Freestyle Pizza lives up to its old-fashioned description, but the menu has a few surprises.
Along with the favorites pepperoni, Hawaiian, vegetarian the pizza shop offers a number of house specialty pizzas like The Sweet & Spicy or Jalapeno Heaven, which includes jalapenos, spicy sausage, hot sauce and red peppers.
But one of the stores biggest hits remains an iteminspired by Conant’s wifes food allergies: gluten-free pizza.
We sell a lot of the gluten-free pizzas. Its made to order, so you can do any size, Conant said. They just call ahead and we make it.
When it first opened, in June 2011, Freestyle Pizza used about 10 pounds of gluten-free flour a month. Now, the store is up to 40 lbs a month. The owner said the gluten-free option and preparing all toppings locally gives people with food allergies the chance to enjoy a meal without feeling like an outcast.
My wife has food allergies. Do you have any idea the number of places weve been in that she cant eat anything except a salad? he said. We try to use real ingredients, nothing processed to make our food accessible to people with allergies. We use about the best ingredients we can buy. Our vegetables are cut here, our meats are made here. It’s that kind of stuff that matters.
Freestyle Pizza offers restaurant dining, take-and-bake pizzas and delivery for Umatilla and McNary.
The Umatilla restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and from 11-9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
