With momentum building against an ingredient known as “BVO,” the Coca-Cola Company has agreed to stop using it.

Coca-Cola has agreed to stop using Brominated Vegetable Oil by the end of the year. Bromine, a chemical used in the production of BVO, is also used as a flame retardant.

That link was enough for a Mississippi teenager to build widespread support through a petition on change.org.

After 200-thousand people signed it, PepsiCo agreed to remove BVO from Gatorade. Now, Coca-Cola is following suit.

Coke, however, says all of its drinks are and always have been safe. Brominated Vegetable is used as an emulsifier in mostly citrus-flavored drinks, keeping the ingredients from seperating from each other.
