A Gathering To Remember, A Gathering To Comfort

Community members joined together for a vigil Tuesday night after the deadly shooting at Reynolds High School. Many came to remember Emilio Hoffman, the 14-year-old freshman killed in the gun violence.
Students, parents, teachers and community members were somber as they entered the Greater Portland Baptist Church.
Many looked dazed, only hours after the tragedy unfolded.
Dalilah Evans is 17, and a Reynolds High School junior who attended the vigil. She was part of a group of upper classmen who helped freshmen learn their way around Reynolds High.
She says Emilio Hoffman, the victim of the shooting, was one of them.
“He was a sweetheart. If someone was upset, he’d come up to you and tell you that your smile was beautiful and that you should smile more — and basically made sure that everyone around him was OK before himself,” Evans said.
Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber joined the vigil to show support.
“After the home, the school ought to be the safest place for kids to be — and that’s clearly not the case anymore in our society. I don’t think there are any easy answers but for tonight I think our thoughts and prayers need to go out to those families who are affected and all those young people who’ve been traumatized by this event,” Kitzhaber said.
A number of church members have children who attend the Reynolds school, but the event was open to all in the community.
