The Stanfield Baseball Club couldnt have ended its summer season on a higher note.
In the teams final game of the season against Sunnyside Christian Wednesday, pitcher Dylan Grogan threw a no-hitter and struck out 17 batters on the way to an 8-1 victory in the second game of a doubleheader. Stanfield also won its opening game 15-5.
Coach Bryan Johnson said between the perfect summer conditions and Grogans focus on Wednesday, he just couldnt do anything wrong.
He was throwing really hard, Johnson said of Grogan Thursday. It was a hot day, his arm felt great. He was showing some really electric stuff.
Stanfields four runs in the first inning also helped the team out. The teams offense stalled in the next few innings thanks to great pitching by Sunnyside Christian, but sealed the win in the seventh inning when Stanfield scored on a Ryan Bailey walk, Klay Jensen hit a two-run single and Jason Fitzpatrick picked up an RBI single. Johnson said the team also stole quite a few basis during that game.
In the teams first game against Sunnyside Christian, the team played equally well. Bailey hit a triple in the third inning, which scored four of his teammates.
Bailey had a huge hit in the seventh, Johnson said. It was a great way to end the game.
Johnson said Stanfield also picked up a couple of easy runs thanks to Sunnyside Christian errors. Stanfield pitcher Thyler Monkus had a solid day at the mound, striking out six batters in four innings pitched and only allowing two runs.
It was a great way to finish our summer, Johnson said. We played very well there.
Johnson said the two wins Wednesday outweighed the teams recent doubleheader loss to Pasco Tuesday, which came down to the final inning in both games.
Johnson said Stanfield committed too many errors in each game to secure a victory. In the opener, Stanfield was down 5-1 heading into the sixth inning, when the team scored three runs but wound up losing 6-5. In the nightcap Stanfield came back from a deficit to knot the score at nine runs before losing 10-9 in eight innings.
Both of those games, we just made too many errors, but it was good to see us come back, Johnson said. In Tuesdays game, Stanfield was playing with primarily 15-year-olds, while Pasco was fielding older, incoming seniors on its team.
But it was some good competition, Johnson said. We played them tough both games. In game two, we really rallied. We were able to tie it up to 9-9 in the sixth.
Johnson said, overall, he feels positive about the teams progress throughout the summer season.
We played some good competition, he said. We are not really worried about the wins and losses during the summer. We saw some areas that we need to work on, and then we have until next spring A lot of our young kids that are going to be freshmen got in a lot of good experience.
Johnson said, based on stats from the season, he wants to focus on pitchers throwing strikes more consistently next season. He said the pitchers averaged about a walk an inning, which was too many. He said the team will also need to tighten up its defense.
Defensively, we can always improve, he said. In some of the games, we had a few errors. We were also playing guys at different posts to see what they had in those areas.
