Last weeks Farm-City Pro Rodeo marked one of the most successful in rodeo board member Jon Gills recollection, with the attendance up and competition stiff.
One of the best things about the event, he said, was the weather.
Cooler temperatures led to comfortable patrons, and the heat was left to the action in the arena.
We couldnt ask for better weather, Gill said.
More patrons turned out this year, he said, adding Saturdays final performances took place in front of a sold-out crowd.
At least from his standpoint, everything about this years Farm-City Pro Rodeo ran according to plan, Gill said.
From the position Im in as far as the production, we had four good, fast-paced performances, and everything went really smooth, he said.
While he only got to catch bits and pieces of the event each night, he said Saturdays spectators were treated to four champion performances in the bareback, bull riding, team roping and saddle bronc events, although the competition on the other evenings was just as exciting.
It is always nice to award the champions when they are here, Gill said.
Although the times in steer wrestling werent snappy, with quite a few competitors racking up the seconds as they struggled to take down their animal, Gill said the large size of the animals and the difficulty made it a true steer-wrestling event.
Spectators also saw many successful bull rides, which makes the event more fun, Gill said.
We had quite a few successful rides this year, he said. I think the bull riders are just getting a little bit better.
Not that the bulls were making it easy for them.
Of the riders who stayed atop their bulls for the full eight seconds, many posted high scores, which added to the crowds excitement.
We still like to have some good, high-scoring rides, Gill said.
In addition, he said the steers in the team-roping event came from some of the best herds he has seen.
The rodeo also had 519 entries, although some of the athletes didnt compete because of injuries suffered just before. Still, Gill said the payoff was one of the best at more than $205,000.
Overall, it was kind of a flawless event for us, Gill said.
