BBPD, the Brad and Bruce Power Duo, perform at Umatilla Landing Days Saturday. Blue Tattoo will headline the event from 6 p.m. until the fireworks display at 10 p.m. at Umatilla Marina Park.

Despite triple digit temperatures by early afternoon, hundreds of people attended Umatilla Landing Days today, and many planned to return for the fireworks at 10 p.m. tonight.

Umatilla Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Karen Hutchinson-Talaski said fewer people were attending than usual because of the heat, but there was still a steady crowd.

“I’d like it to be cooler, but the breeze is nice,” she said. “I think it’s going pretty well. There’s plenty of food and great vendors. There’s lots of ways to stay cool.”

Ann Cotterell, Umatilla, took her grandchildren to the parade and the festivities at Umatilla Marina Park, which continue until the 10 p.m. fireworks display.

“We come every year,” she said. “It’s not as busy as it usually is, but it’s really hot. They’ve got a lot of food and a lot of vendors. I think it’s great for a little small-town thing.”

Cotterell said she plans to watch the fireworks display from an overlook in McNary and that the show is usually pretty good.

Aaron Ham, Umatilla, said more people usually attend, but the temperature probably deterred some people.

“It’s pretty dead,” he said. “Maybe at night it will be better.”

Jolene MacDonald, Umatilla, said the best part of the event was the parade, and 10-year-old Kaydence Hansen said she was enjoying the event, especially the cotton candy and frozen yogurt.

Volunteer Judy Simmons said people were enjoying the festival, despite the temperature.

“It all depends on the weather, but nine times out of 10, nature has cooperated,” she said.

Simmons said boat rides are usually offered, but organizers could not find any boats this year. She said they have some possible boats they may utilize next year.
