A Hermiston man died in Spokane, Washington, late Friday from injuries he sustained from a Wednesday fight north of Hermiston.
The mother of 53-year-old David Wayne Newton, Hilda White, confirmed that her son died at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane at 10:50 p.m. Friday.
Witnesses told the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office that Newton and Lloyd Allan Terpening, 54, from Irrigon were in a fight Jan. 20 at a commercial property at 81252 Highway 395, just south of the Hermiston Super Oval racetrack.
Newton sustained a serious head injury during the fight and was taken by his daughter to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston before being later transferred to Sacred Heart.
The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office located Terpening Friday, although he wasn’t arrested and no charges have been filed.
Sheriff Terry Rowan declined to comment on whether Terpening was a suspect in the case Saturday, saying it was still under investigation.
