- Krista Cliff, 16, who has autism, rides a bike at the iCan Bike program Thursday at Armand Larive Middle School with the help of Karen Timmons, from left, Abbi Feltner, Mindy Barron and Autumn Wiley. Feltner travels to host weeklong camps at various locations, and the others are local volunteers.
A day camp that teaches individuals with disabilities to ride a bicycle is seeking participants and volunteers.
Participants of the iCan Bike program must be at least 8 years old. Teens and adults with disabilities also can participate.
Other requirements of participants include being able to walk without an assistive device, have the ability to side-step quickly to both sides, have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 220 pounds.
The five-day camp includes attendance at one 75-minute session per day. It runs from Monday, June 27, through Friday, July 1, at Armand Larive Middle School, 1497 S.W. Ninth St., Hermiston. The cost is $99 per camper.
Parents of participants and volunteers will attend a 45-minute orientation Sunday, June 26 (the time will be announced).
As part of the nonprofit iCan Shine, the organization uses adapted equipment, trained professionals and volunteers. Participants are physically assisted and encouraged by two volunteer spotters.
The program touts more than an 80 percent success rate, resulting in participants learning to ride a conventional bicycle independently by the end of camp. Parents, teachers and therapists said learning to ride a bicycle can build confidence.
“The gift of being able to ride is the best experience I’ve ever experienced in my life. When I ride I feel free, like I can do anything,” said a 2015 iCan Bike participant.
Cindy Middleton helped bring the program to Hermiston several years ago. Her son, Rian, participated in a similar program in Longview, Washington.
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. They must be able to participate during the same 90-minute time period each day of the camp. In addition, volunteers are needed to help pack and put equipment away after the last day of camp.
The activity includes some light jogging and running. Also, volunteers provide physical, emotional and motivational support to their assigned rider.
This year’s camp is being hosted by the Hermiston School District, Hermiston Kiwanis and InterMountain Education School District.
