- Hermiston Mayor Dave Drotzmann takes a big bite of watermelon before competing in a seed spitting contest on Aug. 17, 2019, at Melon Fest in Hermiston. This 2022 event is Saturday, Aug. 20, on Hermiston’s Festival Street.
Hermiston’s first Melon Fest made a splash Saturday.
Three teams — the LeBeau family, Drown Proof and Recall Kate Brown — ended the bathtub race tournament in a tie after technical difficulties with the wheels on the watermelon-shaped tubs prevented the final race.
Scott Clark of the Hermiston Police Department won the seed-spitting contest with the greatest distance, while Greater Hermiston Area Chamber of Commerce director Kimberly Nevil spit her seed closest to the watermelon drawn in sidewalk chalk.
Ken Galimanis won the watermelon-themed dress-up contest as “Watermelon Man.”
The event also provided giveaways, live music, vendors, face painting and a photo booth.
