Paul was born to his parents Jacob Steven Hellinger and Rosie Avery Hellinger. Family lived in Porter, Oklahoma, and soon moved to Wagner, Oklahoma, during his school age years.
Paul enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 17. He traveled worldwide and served five tours of duty in Southeast Asia. Paul served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force.
While home on leave at his brother’s in Escalon, California, he met Greta May Oredson. They married on July 2, 1957, in Niagara Falls, New York. Later they had two children, Christel Lee Hellinger Michel and Scott Henry Hellinger.
Paul retired from the USAF in 1973 and made their home in Caldwell, Idaho, where he later started his own business, Paul’s Lock and Key. In 1980 Paul, Greta and Scott moved to Stanfield, Oregon, where Paul began working as a locksmith at the Umatilla Army Depot while continuing his own business until he retired from civil service in 1994. After retiring from the Army Depot, he and Greta moved to Northern Idaho until March of 2004, when they moved back to Caldwell, Idaho, until his death on April 30, 2021.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Greta M. Hellinger, parents Jake and Rosie Hellinger, four brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his two children, Christel Lee Hellinger Michel and Scott Henry Hellinger, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Paul met Lida Little in 2010 and she became his soul mate until his death.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 7, 2021, at Flahiff Funeral Chapels, 624 Cleveland Blvd., Caldwell, Idaho. Inurnment will follow services at Canyon Hill Cemetery, with military honors.
