- Elizabeth Doherty, 16, stands in front of the Hermiston City Council and city officials at the end of her first city council meeting Monday, March 28, 2022. Doherty is one of the city’s new youth advisers.
The most recent edition of the Hermiston Herald included news of new youth advisors for the city of Hermiston.
These new advisors have started working closely with city officials. Though not able to vote for anything, they will be asked for their opinions in meetings.
This past week provided an example of how this would work. The Hermiston City Council invited Elizabeth Doherty, one of the new advisors, to sit next to council members during a meeting.
Sitting in the front of the room, shoulder to shoulder with the council, Doherty heard from officials and other Hermiston residents as they discussed important city matters.
City projects, land, pensions and finances were some of the topics at the meeting.
At the end of the meeting, Doherty said that she enjoyed it.
Also, she said she was impressed by everyone involved. Members of the public, who attended the meeting, were very passionate about their city, she said. And city representatives seemed professional, she added.
Doherty said she was looking forward to attending more meetings.
Meanwhile, city officials said they were looking forward to her input, as well as the input of other advisors.
