From the editor’s desk: Elections and the kindness of neighbors

It was a late night for us here at the Hermiston Herald. Like many primary candidates, we were up late as we followed the latest vote counts.
The Hermiston City Council was our top focus, as four seats were up for grabs. By 11 p.m., it seemed that challengers Jackie Linton and David McCarthy won their elections against Lori Davis and Phillip Spicerkuhn.
Meanwhile, incumbent Roy Barron fended off challenger Stan Stradley. Incumbent Jackie Meyers, running unopposed, received nearly every vote for her position.
Though these elections have yet to be certified, the leads are significant, and it seems that the frontrunners will all be part of the council at the start of 2023.
We had local county commissioner elections to follow, too — in Morrow County and Umatilla County.

In Wednesday’s print edition, we featured work done by the Hermiston community. Many people and businesses came together to renovate the home of a woman in need.
Noticing that her home needed some TLC, friends of her son organized an effort to make the place more beautiful.
The house now has new roofing, flooring and more.
If ever you need evidence to show the kindness of our local people, speak of this, because the work done for this person was very special.
