From the editor’s desk: Graduation celebrated in the area

Students graduating in 2022 are at the end of a difficult road. We caught up with local school administrators to see how they are doing. We were glad to receive and report on the good news. The kids are alright.

Superintendents and other school representatives told us that their graduation numbers are good. Students endured the pandemic and lockdowns, and they were successful at school when they returned. At each school that we looked into, a larger-than-usual percentage of seniors graduated on time.

We published many photos. If you have kids in these classes, you might be especially interested to see these pictures.

Meanwhile, the schools they left behind are dealing with a problem — protecting students from potential shooters. A front-page story from reporter John Tillman and EO editor Phil Wright tells of local police and planned responses to school violence.

It’s a difficult thing to contemplate, but school shootings should be on our minds right now. Columns from Jose Garcia and Tricia Mooney weigh in on the issue further.
