Area high school students in grades nine through 12 are invited to participate in the American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program.

American Legion Post No. 37 of Hermiston is sponsoring a program at the local level, which includes students in Boardman, Echo, Hermiston, Irrigon, Stanfield and Umatilla. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in an educational program, which can include public school, private schools or homeschool. In addition, participants must be citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States.

Post Cmdr. Aaron Wetterling said winners competing at the local level may move on to the district, state or national levels — with an opportunity of winning upwards of $25,000 in scholarships. Funds, he said, would be paid directly to the institution of higher learning where the student attends.

The topic will focus on an aspect of the U.S. Constitution with an emphasis on a citizen’s duties and obligations. Those interested in participating in the program are encouraged to meet with the American Legion on Oct. 1, 7 p.m. at Agape House, 500 W. Harper Road, Hermiston. If possible, bring a parent or guardian.
