From the editor’s desk: Area readies for Halloween, task force deals with homelessness

- Skeletons, spiders and tombstones light up Monday, Oct. 24, 2022, at the front yard of Craig Dircksen’s house in Hermiston.
By late October, shop windows were decorated and schedules were filled. There was a lot of planning for Halloween, and we covered much of the activities in the Hermiston Herald.
In fact, one of the most popular stories of the week, written by new Hermiston Herald reporter Beau Glynn, is about Halloween decorating.
The story covers the work of Hermiston local Craig Dircksen, who “is taking Halloween decorating to another level.”
Dircksen’s house, located at 790 W. Johns Ave., Hermiston, is decorated with tombstones, cobwebs, a massive werewolf and more. There are lights and sounds, too.
You’d have to see the house to believe it. So when you check out Beau’s story about it, check out his photos, too. Wild stuff.
Also in the news, reporter John Tillman covered work being done by Hermiston Mayor David Drotzmann and the rest of the Oregon Mayors Association.
The mayors formed a task force and submitted a plan to address homelessness in the state.
Drotzmann praised the task force for bridging divides between urban/rural and east/west, as well as political divides, to create a unified plan.
In addition to those two stories, the Herald covered Hermiston’s Riverfront Park reconstruction, the death of Morrow County School Board Member Barney Lindsay, an upcoming church event, the Hermiston FFA and more.
