- Daniel Sharp and a group of his students set up a free car wash and lemonade stand Thursday, May 18, 2023, in Stanfield for the Tom McCann Memorial Day of Service.
Although the print edition comes out on Wednesdays, readers were able to learn results from the Tuesday, May 16, election on the Hermiston Herald website.
While most area races were uncontested, there was significant interest leading up to Election Day regarding Position 7 on the Hermiston Board of Education. Michael Kane, of Northeast Oregon Now, reported on the Voterhermiston Facebook page that exposed past tweets posted by candidate Nazario Rivera. Garnering approximately 60% of the votes, James Hurst won the election.
And Herald reporter Beau Glynn kept Morrow County voters in the know regarding a pair of commissioner races at the Port Of Morrow. In a crowded field, incumbent John Murray retained his seat in Position 5, while challenger Kelly Doherty ousted incumbent Marvin Padberg for Position 4.
And in this past week’s edition, Glynn shined a spotlight on the Outskirts page about Stanfield’s second annual Tom McCann Memorial Day of Service. A photo gallery is now available for viewing from the Thursday, May 18, event, which featured students giving back to their community in many ways.
In the coming week’s edition, look for a feature by Kane with photos by Yasser Marte about an effort to assist area law enforcement officers with Spanish.
Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston arranged for Alentado Training Consultants to lead the weeklong workshop. While he doesn’t expect participants to walk away speaking the language fluently, Edmiston said they can learn key phrases that can be helpful for an officer to understand.
Also, it’s Edmiston’s hope that officers will continue to brush up on the language — offering a pay bonus for those who can pass a Spanish fluency test.
And in community/school news, learn who won Crystal Apple Awards. In its 23rd year, the InterMountain Education Service District announced the recipients on Tuesday, May 16.
The awards recognize outstanding administrators, teachers, educational assistants and office/building staff in school districts served by the ESD in Umatilla and Morrow counties.
It’s all part of the Hermiston Herald’s efforts, both in print and online, to keep you informed about the latest happenings throughout Umatilla and Morrow counties.
