Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Susan Whelan and I am retired, but I have lots of fun with things that I do voluntarily.

Where did you grow up? When did you come to Stanfield?

I was born in Forest Grove and spent six years there, spent seven years in Condon, then I moved to Astoria and spent two years there. When I was in high school, I moved to Stanfield and I’ve been here ever since.

What are a few of your hobbies?

In the summertime, I like to garden, and I volunteer a lot at church and school.

How would you describe yourself?

I am a person who enjoys life, likes to have a good time, and likes to be around people that are enjoying life and having a good time. I don’t like to sit around and do nothing. I want to have a little fun and be as active as I can.

What is something that you’re passionate about?

My kids and grandkids. I have five grandchildren and three children and I love them all. That’s the main focus of my happiness, getting to spend time with them.

What are a few of your proudest accomplishments?

I’m very proud of the adults my children have turned out to be. I’ve been involved in city government for the past five to six years as a city councilman and then last year I was elected mayor, so I was thankful the council thought I could do the job and elected me.

What is something you think your community could use?

I think we need to work on cleaning up some of the eyesores in town and we could also use volunteers that are young with good ideas and want to be heard.

What do you like most about the community you live in?

I like the fact that it’s a small town and that people here are friendly and outgoing. I like that there’s no traffic, which is silly but true. I also like knowing the people around me.
