Rent-a-Castle: How you can work remotely like royalty

Want to get medieval? Then go live in a castle.

Ah, yes, the castle, a fixture in fairy tales and horror movies, a symbol of power, wealth and majesty from Camelot to Transylvania and everywhere in between.

Ralph Kramden from “The Honeymooners” believed a man’s home was his castle. Dracula hung his cape up in a castle after working the night shift.

The actor Tony Curtis was mercilessly–and wrongly, it turns out–ridiculed for supposedly delivering the line “Yonder lies da castle of my foddah” in a royally inappropriate Bronx accent.

And can you imagine Henry the Eighth ruling England from a condo or Dr. Frankenstein juicing up his monster from inside a trailer park? Never gonna happen, dude.

In short, there’s simply not a more congenial spot for happily-ever-aftering than a honest-to-goodness castle.

Christie’s International Real Estate has a section on its website dedicated to castle living.

‘Hear ye, Hear ye…’

In addition to listing castles and palaces by country, the site also has such subheadings as “8 Castles That Blend the Medieval with the Modern,” and “Royal Residences: 6 Homes Fit for Kings & Queens.”

The Kentucky Castle, located in central part of the Bluegrass state, was recently sold for $19 million. The original owner began building the structure in 1969 following a trip to Europe.

All right, so maybe you don’t need to buy a place with a moat and drawbridge. But you can spend the night–knight?–in one.

The company Highland Titles did a survey of what’s out there in the way of castles for rent.

The firm researched 274 castle listings on Airbnb to learn which castles you can stay at, average costs, and available amenities. Highland Titles also surveyed over 1,000 residents of the U.S. and the U.K. about their castle vacation dreams.

Renting an entire castle from turret to drawbridge costs an average of $1,201 per night, while a private room within a castle costs about $242 per night, although that figure does vary depending upon where your castle in kept.

In Italy, for example, renting an entire castle will cost you $3,133 a night, while a private room will set you back 97 bucks.

Meanwhile, over in Ireland, a whole castle goes for $930 per night, while a private room goes for $233.

Entire castle rentals averaged $892 per night in the U.S., while the average cost for a private castle room in the U.S. was $278 per night.

California, New York, and Texas have the most castle rental listings in the U.S. The top occasions people want to rent a castle for are weddings, vacations, and family reunions.

Americans are most interested in European castle rentals in England, France, and Italy.

U.K. residents, on the other hand, are most interested in U.S. castle rentals in California, New York, and Hawaii, where clanking around in a suit of armor is bound to turn a few heads.

“Castles in the U.S. aren’t as numerous as in Europe, but there are many beautiful options, like Gregoire Castle in Vermont or Franklin Castle in Oklahoma,” Highland Titles said.

California and New York had the most castles available to rent at eight each, while Texas had the third most with five.

Younger people were more interested in a castle stay than others, with 90% of Gen Z and millennials wanting to rent a castle, compared with 72% of baby boomers and 83% of Gen X.

Nearly 60% of respondents wanted to rent a castle for a wedding, while 29% were interested in a castle vacation, 27% would host a family reunion, and 24% would celebrate an anniversary like royalty.

Still, while the survey found that 85% of respondents were interested in renting a castle, only 5% had actually done the deed.
