HERMISTON– The Hermiston High School will hold this year’s Amazon Web Services Girls’ Tech Day on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 8:30 a.m.- 2 p.m.

First created in 2018, Girls’ Tech Day is a free half-day program meant to teach and inspire young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

“The event aims to inspire girls to dream of careers in STEAM and make them aware of the many career paths available to them,” an Amazon spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said more than 300 middle school girls from across Eastern Oregon will have a chance to enjoy free tech workshops and learn about a wide range of tech careers during the event.

“This year, Girls’ Tech Day is celebrating its five-year anniversary, and the goal is to make this the biggest event yet,” said Paul Butler, Community Engagement Manager for AWS InCommunities.

This year’s Girls’ Tech Day will be hosted by Hermiston School District Superintendent Dr. Tricia Mooney. The event will feature a discussion panel of local female STEAM professionals that include leaders from Umatilla Electric Cooperative, Three Mile Canyon, AWS, PrimeAir and more.

Students will have the opportunity to visit a variety of free tech workshops. These workshops will cover how tech can be used to optimize farming for sustainability and efficiency, discovering nature’s capacity to glow and creating their own glowing flower, building their own robot, what it’s like to be a real forensic scientist, learning about human anatomy through virtual reality and much more.
