Armand Larive students vie for media award

Five Armand Larive Middle School students were named finalists in the National Scholastic Press Association 2023 Broadcast Story of the Year competition for junior high/middle schools.
HERMISTON — A handful of Armand Larive Middle School students were named finalists for the 2023 Broadcast Story of the Year in the National Scholastic Press Association competition.

According to a Hermiston School District press release, Brooklin Bacon, Avery Devin, Sofia Rodriguez and Kylie Virgil were recognized for their story, “The Human Bean,” about a coffee shop under construction in Hermiston. And Jakoby Rodriguez for “What got them into coaching?” It’s a story about coaches of the HHS girls’ basketball team.
Four additional finalists are vying for the award. The winner will be announced at the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention Nov. 4 in Boston.
Under the leadership of Rob Doherty’s ALTV class, the videos were submitted in June. ALTV broadcast students record and produce the school announcements, a monthly news show and school athletic events.
