Bulldogs extend volleyball season with play-in win

KENNEWICK — The Bulldogs extended their season with a 22-25, 25-15, 25-15, 25-19 victory over the host Southridge Suns in a District 8 play-in game on Saturday, Oct. 28.

“We executed our game plan perfectly about midway through the first set and beyond to put a lot of pressure on them with our serve,” Hermiston coach Dan Headley said. “That allowed us to get our offense going and mix up our plays to keep them off guard.”

Izzy Simmons led the Bulldogs with 10 kills, 19 digs, and one ace on 100% serving. Carolyn Follett added nine kills, Kaylee Elliott eight kills, Lucy Teegarden six kills, Camryn Hagel 16 digs, and Lucie Nguyen had 19 assists and one ace on 100% serving.

Hermiston was set to play at Mt. Spokane on Oct. 31 at 6 p.m. in the first round of the 3A District 8 tournament.

LOWELL 3, STANFIELD 0 — The Devils advanced to the Elite 8 with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-22 win over the visiting Tigers in the first round of the 2A state tournament.

Mazie Reeser led the Tigers (12-14) with 14 kills, 15 digs and two blocks, while Kylee Jackson had seven kills, four blocks and 17 digs. Mykael Graham handed out 20 assists and had six digs, and Kayla Monkus chipped in 16 digs, five kills and two aces.

GASTON 3, HEPPNER 0 — The Greyhounds ran away with a 25-17, 25-15, 25-20 first-round victory over the host Mustangs in the 2A state tournament.

Hallee Hisler led the Mustangs (18-9) with eight kills, nine digs, three aces and two blocks, while Maya Payne had six kills, seven assists and eight digs.

Katie Spivey added 20 digs, while Ava Gerry had 12 assists, 11 digs, three aces and two blocks, and Morgan Cutsforth had five kills, 11 digs and three aces.

CHIAWANA 3, HERMISTON 0 — The Bulldogs closed out their Mid-Columbia Conference season with a 25-15, 25-22, 25-21 home loss to the Riverhawks on Oct. 26.

Piper Roberts led the Bulldogs with seven kills, while Lucy Teegarden had four kills, and Camryn Hagel 22 digs.

UNION 3, IONE/ARLINGTON 1 — Union handed Ione/Arlington a stunning loss in the first round of the 1A state volleyball tournament, coming away with a 25-15, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21 victory Oct. 25.

After dropping the first set, the Cardinals (22-4) rallied to win the second set, but couldn’t keep the momentum on their side.

Calli Troutman led the Cardinals with 12 kills, five blocks, and was 7 for 7 from the service line with one ace. Grace Claughton had nine kills and four blocks, Najiah Knight was 10 for 10 serving with two aces, and Phegley Padberg had 26 aces and was 15 for 15 serving with two aces.

TRINITY LUTHERAN 3, ECHO 0 — The Saints knocked the Cougars out of the 1A state playoffs with a 25-7, 25-22, 25-7 victory in the first round in Bend.

Nevaeh Thew had five kills, seven assists and 10 digs for echo (11-13), while Jaki Bartoschek and five kills, Kenzie Hendrix five assists, and Athina Siedman eight digs and two aces.
