HERMISTON — Izzy Simmons had a record-setting night Jan. 2, scoring a school-record 40 points with 15 rebounds as Hermiston ran over Hanford 79-57 in Mid-Columbia Conference action at the Dawg House.

Simmons surpassed the school record of 38 points set by her mom, Alissa Edwards Simmons in 1998, with a pair of free throws in the waning seconds of the game.

Simmons, who needed 41 points before the game to reach 1,000 career points, fell one short.

Jazlyn Romero was the last Hermiston player to come close to the school record, scoring 34 points in a game against Pasco during the 2019-20 season.

The Bulldogs led 51-38 after the third quarter, then went on a 29-19 run in the fourth quarter, keyed by 13 points from Simmons, to put the game out of reach.

Hermiston led 23-16 after the first quarter, and 41-24 at the half as Simmons, off an assist by Ellie Heideman, drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Falcons cut the lead to single digits at one point in the third quarter, but that was short lived as Simmons poured in all 10 of the Bulldogs’ points to extend the lead to 13 points with one quarter to play.

Simmons also had eight assists and seven steals to add to her highlights. Aspyn Inners added 14 points for Hermiston, while Lucy Teegarden had eight points and 12 rebounds, and Heideman eight points and five rebounds.

Lynnea Moran led the Falcons with 37 points, while Kendall Meyer added 12.
