The Oregon Department of Transportation responded to a number of crashes in Eastern Oregon since Sunday, Jan. 7, according to Public Information Officer Vicki Moles. Some of the crashes have not impacted traffic, while others have led to extended closure of Interstate 84.
“Most of what we are seeing are crashes and vehicles spinning out because they have no traction,” Moles said.
I-84 has been closed for more than 10 hours since Jan. 7 following crashes, according to ODOT.

“Since Sunday it’s been (closed for) a considerable amount of time,” Moles said.
Crashes closed the interstate near La Grande on back-to-back days. The westbound lanes were closed for four hours on Jan. 7 between La Grande and Poverty Flats. The closure was then extended to Baker City and Ontario. The following evening on Jan. 8 the eastbound lanes were closed between Pendleton and La Grande due to multiple vehicles spinning out near Upper Perry Bridge.
An early morning crash on Jan. 9 closed I-84 in both directions between Baker and Ontario for nearly four hours due to a crash near milepost 334, according to ODOT.
The National Weather Service in Pendleton issued a blizzard warning for the Cascade and Blue Mountains, which is in effect until 10 a.m. on Jan. 10.
“If people don’t need to travel, we advise them to stay home and stay safe,” Moles said.
If it is necessary to travel, Moles recommends that travelers prepare for winter driving conditions. This includes making sure they have emergency supplies in their cars, such as water, food, warming clothing and blankets. She also recommends travelers give their cars a look over — checking tire pressure, oil, fuel and making sure they have chains or traction tires if needed.
Moles advises drivers to check the weather forecast and TripCheck before hitting the road. It can also be helpful to periodically check for updates throughout their trip if they are able.
“Be prepared if you go,” she said.
