Local roundup: Stanfield boys improve to 3-0 in BMC

STANFIELD — After a slow start to the season, Stanfield has won six games in a row, and leads the Blue Mountain Conference at 3-0 after a 74-36 win over Enterprise on Saturday, Jan. 13.
“We flat out were ready to play,” Stanfield coach Rylie Smith said. “We were locked in defensively the whole game, and anyone who gets in plays for more than themselves. They want to do good things on the court for their teammates, and that’s when we have been playing our best basketball.”
The Tigers (7-5) sprinted out to a 15-6 lead after the first quarter, and Landon Bailey scored 14 of his 20 points in the second as Stanfield took a commanding 44-19 lead at the half.
All but one player on the Stanfield roster scored, with Michael Odell adding 19 points, while Pablo Arellano had seven points and four rebounds, and Daniel Mendez seven points.
Bailey added six rebounds and four steals, while Connor Logan had nine rebounds and two blocks, and James Patterson had five rebounds and two blocks.
“I love being able to get everyone in the game for meaningful minutes,” especially since everyone is so selfless,” Smith said.
Quentin Arellano led the Outlaws (10-6, 0-3 BMC) with eight points, while Kason Mitchell added seven.
HEPPNER AT IRRIGON, CANCELED — The power went out at Irrigon High School with 28 seconds remaining in the varsity girls game, prompting the cancellation of the boys game.
With the contest being a Blue Mountain Conference game, it will be rescheduled.
KAMIAKIN 62, HERMISTON 41 — The Bulldogs held the league’s leading scorer Peter Dress to just eight points, but the Braves found the open man for points in posting a home win over Hermiston in Mid-Columbia Conference play.
James Kinsey took over the scoring for Kamiakin, pouring in 25 points, including 15 in the second half, where the Braves outscored the Bulldogs 28-17.
Kamiakin led 17-14 after the first quarter, then used a 17-10 run in the second for a 34-24 lead at the half.
Grant Olsen Led the Bulldogs with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Isaac Corey added eight points, and Drake Devin six.
ECHO 60, GRISWOLD 12 — Dom Curiel had 14 points, and Mack Murdock added 13, as the Cougars rolled to an Old Oregon League road win over the Grizzlies.
The Cougars got out to a 28-2 lead after the first quarter and were never challenged.
Echo’s lead ballooned to 43-4 at the half as Curiel scored six of his points in the second quarter.
Kohlvin Wyse and Jack Sperr each added eight points for the Cougars (10-6 overall, 2-1 OOL).
Robby Garrett led the Grizzlies (2-11, 0-2) with five points, with Ethan Reeder added four.
NIXYAAWII 80, PILOT ROCK 40 — Baron Moses had 26 points, five steals and five blocks, as the Golden Eagled doubled up the host Rockets in an Old Oregon League contest.
Nixyaawii (10-3 overall, 3-0 OOL) led 24-12 after the first quarter, and increased its lead to 43-17 at the half. The Golden Eagles soared to victory from there.
Symon Picard added 22 points and seven steals for Nixyaawii, while Weptas Brockie chipped in 13 points and six rebounds. Marcellus Scott added six rebounds and seven steals.
For the Rockets (4-10, 0-3), Lewis Hansen had 14 points, and Chase Corwin added 10.
Girls basketball
ENTERPRISE 39, STANFIELD 36 — The Outlaws took advantage of a poor showing by the Tigers in the third quarter for a Blue Mountain Conference road win.
“Enterprise played harder and smarter than we did,” Stanfield coach Dan Sharp said. “We have to stop taking quarters off.”
Stanfield (9-3 overall, 2-1 BMC) led 22-18 at the half, but a 14-3 run by the Outlaws put them out front 32-25. The Tigers made up four points of the deficit, but would fall short in the end.
Kayla Monkus and Mazie Reeser each had 12 points for the Tigers, while Kahleigha Haney chipped in eight points.
Enterprise (10-6), which improved to 3-0 in BMC play, got 17 points from Nevaeh James, and 11 from Alex Rowley.
HEPPNER 55, IRRIGON 28 — Hallee Hisler had 16 points, and Delaney Stefani added 10, as the Mustangs beat the Knights on the road in Blue Mountain Conference play.
Hisler scored 12 of her points in the first half as Heppner (13-4 overall, 2-2 BMC) jumped out to a 31-12 lead. The Mustangs’ lead ballooned to 46-20 after three quarters.
Hadlie Nation added eight points for Heppner, while Avree Lathrop had seven.
Lizett Sanchez and Jordyn Escamilla each had seven points for the Knights (2-13, 0-3).
KAMIAKIN 80, HERMISTON 69 — The Braves got off to a hot start and never let up in beating the visiting Bulldogs in Mid-Columbia Conference action at Randy Dolven Gymnasium.
Nicole Wertenberger had 14 of her 30 points in the first quarter as Kamiakin took a 30-21 lead. The Braves extended their lead to 46-30 at the half and never the Bulldogs back in the game.
Izzy Simmons led Hermiston with 22 points, while Lucy Teegarden added 17 points and seven rebounds, and Alexah Moreno 13 points.
Emaunii Smith chipped 18 points for the Braves, who got points from five players.
NIXYAAWII 57, PILOT ROCK 37 — Ella Stewart had 17 points to lead the Golden Eagles to an Old Oregon League road win over the Rockets.
Stewart scored 12 of her points in the first half as Nixyaawii rolled out to a 27-8 lead at the half.
Pilot Rock outscored the Golden Eagles 29-20 in the second half, but the damage had already been done.
Annalise Watchman added 14 points for Nixyaawii (5-8 overall, 2-1 OOL), while Amariana Willingham added 13.
The Rockets (4-9, 0-3) got 13 points from Ali Smith and 12 from Paige Moffit.
Boy wrestling
Hermiston crowned four champions, Jaysen Rodriguez earned the Outstanding Wrestler award, and the Bulldogs came home with the team title from the 25th annual Ray Westberg Invitational in Ellensburg.
The Bulldogs piled up 201 points, with Othello (182) second, and Wapato (174.5) third.
Rodriguez, wrestling at 132 pounds, pinned three of his first four opponents, then earned a 6-5 decision over Grandview’s Evan Benitez in the championship match.
Freshman Aidan Larson won the 126-pound title, getting two decisions and a pin to reach the championship match, where he pinned Burley (Idaho) senior Miguel Fernandez in 3:06.
At 144 pounds, Hermiston’s Daniel Garza pinned his first three opponents to earn a spot in the title match. In the finals, Garza earned a 7-2 decision over Gabriel Borisch of Southridge.
Ben Larson (165) pinned his first three opponents in less than 50 seconds, then earned an 11-0 major decision in the semifinals to reach the championship match. Larson topped Deer Park’s Liam Bogle 5-4 for the title.
Mason Miracle (106) and Javier Garcia (157) placed second for Hermiston, while Isaac Ramirez Ruiz (132) was third and Brodie Favorite (113) was sixth.
OREGON CLASSIC — The Bucks went 1-2 on the final day of action and finished sixth at the Deschute County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond.
The Bucks opened the second day with a 49-24 loss to La Grande, then topped Estacada 62-15 to reach a placing match.
Pendleton ran into Tillamook, which it had beaten the day before, but the Cheesemakers came away with a 39-30 win in the fifth-place match.
Against La Grande, Pendleton’s Cole Roy suffered his only loss at the tournament, dropping a 5-1 decision to Mason Wolcott at 134.
Owen McLouth went 3-0 at 128 on Saturday, pinning La Grande’s Michael Gisi in 5:05, then winning by fall over Estacada’s Leroy Mixon in 3:34. In his final match, he earned an 8-0 major decision over Tillamook’s Jakoby Goss.
Miles Kennedy also went 3-0 on Saturday, pinning La Grande’s Preston Westenskow in 5:59. He then recorded a 25-second pin over Estacada’s Noah Hughes, and finished the day with a 4-3 decision over Tillamook’s Koi Smith.
BATTLE IN THE BLUES — McLoughlin’s Cooper Yensen won the 144-pound title at College Place High School with a second-round pin of Echo’s Keegin Chitty.
The Pioneers finished fourth in the team standings with 82 points. Walla Walla won the team title with 210 points, followed by Warden (164.5) and College Place (93.5). Echo was fifth with 54 points.
Dallen Duncan placed second at 132 for Mac-Hi as Warden’s Michael Gonzalez came away with a 124 major decision in the title match.
Aslo for the Pioneers, Tyler Hoel (120) finished third, and Daxsen Alexander-Hayward (126), David Werdeman (138) and Masyn Lindsey (157) were fourth.
Echo’s Caleb Glenn also finished second, getting pinned by Wa-Hi’s Elijah Bauer in 2:54 of the 120-pound title bout.
Talan Pedro finished third for the Cougars, pinning River View’s Aden Welch in 59 seconds in the 106-pound third-place match.
CHIAWANA DUALS — Heppner finished fourth at the Chiawana Duals in Pasco, falling to Mid-Columbia Conference schools Hanford and Richland in the championship bracket.
The Mustangs won Pod 4 with a 40-21 win over Waptato, a 42-39 win over Kennewick, and a 48-27 loss to Pasco.
With the pod win, Heppner advanced to the championship bracket.
Landon McMahan (215) went 3-0 for Heppner in the pod matches, as he pinned Wapiti’s Julian Vasquez in 2:46, followed by a pin of Kennewick’s Kaden Clawson in 12 seconds. He finished with a 3:30 pin of Pasco’s Benson Salisbury.
McMahon made a clean sweep on the day with a 4:23 pin of Hanford’s Ashtyn Swentik, and a 3:45 pin of Richland’s Brayden Sims.
Jaime Cavan won all four of his matches at 215 for the Mustangs, with two decisions and two falls.
Irrigon finished second in Pod 2, beating Moses Lake 63-15, and the Hermiston JV 40-30.
In the consolation bracket, Irrigon topped Columbia (Burbank) 58-18, and Sunnyside 38-29.
Josiah Moreno went 5-0 for the Knights at 190 pounds. He won all of his matches by fall, with four of the five coming in the first round.
Girls wrestling
The Hermiston girls crowned two champions and finished second in the teams standing at the Davis Girls Invite in Yakima.
Davis won the team title with 159 points, with Hermiston second (136) and Peninsula third (134).
Elena Flores won the 135-pound title for the Bulldogs, pinning Desirae Juarez of Southridge in 4:56.
Kaiomi Morris followed, winning the 190-pound title with a 19-second pin of Sofia Tovar of Grandview in the championship match.
Lindsey Perkins placed second at 235 for the Bulldogs, losing by fall to Madisen Pillars of Newport, who pinned her in 1:02 in the title bout.
Also for Hermiston, Laura Meyers finished fourth at 155, and Hadley White was third at 190, pinning Alizah Gutierrez of Eisenhower in 1:03 of the third-place match.
College women’s basketball
BLUE MOUNTAIN 75, WENATCHEE VALLEY 62 — Avery Beatty had a game-high 22 points to lead the Timberwolves to an NWAC East road win over the Knights.
BMCC (6-8 overall, 2-1 East) had a 32-29 lead at the half, then broke the game open with a 27-15 run in the third quarter.
Leanna Lepe added 20 points for BMCC, which has won two in a row, while Taylor Bull had seven points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
Aria Price led the Knights with 19 points and six rebounds, while Mia Carter chipped in 16 points, and Olivia Martinez nine rebounds.
College men’s basketball
WENATCHEE VALLEY 98, BLUE MOUNTAIN 73 — Tied 40-40 at the half, the Knights went on a 58-33 run in the second half for an NWAC East home win over the Timberwolves.
Kenny Aubin led BCC with 14 points, five assists and four steals, while Jaquone Gatling added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Michael Afrakoff led WV with 25 points, while Eamon Monahan added 24, and Dane Sykes 22.
