Stanfield Library tiny robots no brush-off

STANFIELD — Not all robots vacuum your floor or perform open heart surgery.

Some are a little larger than a toothbrush with the handle removed.

Stanfield youth can get their hands on building such a tiny robot at the Build-a-Bot activity at Stanfield Public Library in January.

The library is providing the components, which of course include the sawed-off toothbrush, a flat disc battery and a miniature motor. Online videos of this popular activity show the battery and motor fastened to the back of the bristle part of a toothbrush, and once battery and motor are connected together, the miniature bot spins and charges in a most undisciplined manner around a flat surface.

“We got grant funding through Amazon Web Services to do different science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics programs through August,” said Library Director Cecili Longhorn.

She said the December program was about baking and in February students can be attracted to magnetism.

Longhorn said she had seen an activity with bristle bots last summer and she wanted to make sure it was included in her library programming for youth.

“The kids had so much fun. I mentioned it to our STEAM coordinator, and she said, ‘Yes, let’s do it,’” Longhorn said.

Longhorn said she has found ways to expand on the activity because, “When they do it once, they may never get to do it again. If we can repeat it and make it a little bit different, I think it can be more fun and make memories for parents.”

Longhorn said the activity is for ages kindergarten on up.

“Our whole goal is to build connections,” Longhorn said. “They’re all invited and we welcome parents and caregivers to come because they can build those connections by helping each other.”

Stanfield Public Library is at 180 W. Coe Ave.

The Build-a-Bot activity is Jan. 18 and Jan. 25, 5-6 p.m.; and Jan. 19 and Jan. 26, 1-2 p.m.

The activity will be led by STEAM Coordinator Kate Johnston and reservations are not needed.
