HERMISTON — Each year, the Oregon School Boards Association identifies January as School Board Recognition Month. The Hermiston School District invites the community to celebrate local volunteers who give their time to prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s world.
According to a HSD press release, board members are very important to the culture and climate of the district’s schools. They establish clear standards for student performance, create a climate that supports the philosophy that all children can learn at high levels, and commit to continuous education and training on issues related to student achievement.
On the board are Sally Hansell, chair; Bonnie Luisi, vice chair; Dain Gardner, second vice chair; and members, Liliana Gomez, James Hurst, Karen Sherman and Teri Vander Stelt. Superintendent Tricia Mooney said each donates countless hours to the district’s students and staff.
“They ensure the voice of our local community is heard at the state level and consistently make decisions for the best interest of our students,” she said.
The district is recognizing school board members this month on social media, at its regular monthly business meeting and with celebrations and assemblies at the schools.
