Local roundup: Irrigon takes down rival Riverside on the mat

BOARDMAN — Irrigon improved to 7-1 in dual meets this season with a 57-21 victory over rival Riverside on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Riverside Duals.
“We have had a strong season,” Irrigon coach Ken Thompson said. “We are looking forward to this week at Culver and next week in Echo.”
Jakson Coffman (106) and Brody Parrish (113) got the Knights rolling with pins to open the match. Irrigon followed with a 3-2 decision by Anthony Castaneda over Anthony Vasquez at 120.
Preston Slawson (126), Colton Akers (132) and Irwyn Murguia (138) all won by fall for the Knights, who took a 30-3 lead.
Riverside interrupted the streak with a forfeit at 144, and a pin by Aiden Murillo at 150.
Irrigon won the next five matches, which included two forfeits, and Riverside finished the match with a pin by Allen Rodriguez over Austin Wells at 285.
Irrigon will compete in the Special District 3 tournament next week in Echo, and Thompson is confident he will take a sizable contingent to state.
“The hay is in the barn,” he said. “I feel good about where we are at. We have to fine tune the conditioning a bit.”
In the second dual of the night, Riverside topped McLoughlin 60-18, including Mateo Rockwell’s 4-2 decision over Dallan Duncan at 132 pounds.
Mac-Hi’s Cooper Yensen won by injury default over Andrew Calderon at 144, and the Pioneers picked up forfeits at 150 and 215.
The Pirates benefitted from five forfeits as the Pioneers have a small squad this season.
PENDLETON 59, ONTARIO 15 — The Bucks won 11 of 14 matches to pick up a Greater Oregon League road win over the Tigers.
Pendleton wasted no time in dominating the match. Ontario won the first bout at 113, but the Bucks won the next eight matches to take a 47-6 lead.
In the string of wins, Oregon Farwell (120), Owen Golter (138), Adam Urbina (144), Vance Nelson (150), Kainen Zimmerman (157), Aidan Perkins (165) all won by fall, while Cole Roy posted a 16-1 technical fall over Abel Garcia at 132.
Miles Kennedy (190) won by forfeit, and Kaleb Lillie finished off the wins for the Bucks with a 35-second pin of Conner Ramos.
Boys basketball
PENDLETON 61, MCLOUGHLIN 52 — The Bucks had three players score in double figures, and they needed every point as they held off the Pioneers for a nonleague road win.
“They didn’t quit,” Pendleton coach Ron Murphy said of Mac-Hi. “They were scrappy. Our bigs did a good job, but we didn’t handle Rajdeep (Singh) very well. Second half, we played better offensively and defensively.”
Pendleton (8-11) jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter, but Mac-Hi cut the deficit to 25-20 at the half. A 17-12 run in the third quarter gave the Bucks a little breathing room, 42-32.
The Pioneers (10-6) made a move in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bucks 20-19, but it wouldn’t be enough.
Colson Primus led the Bucks with 15 points, while Ben Jennings added 14 and Carter Cary 11.
Singh led all scorers with 27 points, while Giovanny Sandoval and Alejandro Sandoval each had eight points.
UMATILLA 52, BURNS 50 (OT) — Micheal Montez scored 27 points and had eight rebounds to help the Vikings to an Eastern Oregon League overtime home win over the Hilanders.
In a close game throughout, Burns (13-5 overall, 2-4 EOL) led 13-10 at the end of the first, and 26-23 at the half.
Montez scored nine of his points in the third quarter as the Vikings took a 34-32 lead. Burns came back to forge a 44-44 tie at the end of the fourth quarter to force overtime.
David Garcia scored three of his nine points in overtime to help Umatilla secure the win.
Mike McGee added seven points and six rebounds for the Vikings (13-6, 4-1), while Mason Munoz had four steals.
Zane Perry-Kozeni led Burns with 18 points, while Grady Christensen added 14.
WESTON-MCEWEN 87, IRRIGON 46 — Dylan Monaco had 20 points, and the TigerScots evened their Blue Mountain Conference record at 4-4 with a road win over the Knights.
W-M cruised to a 21-5 lead in the first quarter, and led 43-18 at the half. A 27-15 run in the third quarter by W-M put the game out of reach for Irrigon.
Anthony Nix added 15 points, six assists and four steals for W-M (9-13), while Mazon Langford had 11 points and four steals, and Easton Berry had 10 steals, 10 assists and six rebounds.
Kaidan Hussey led the Knights (1-18, 0-7) with 21 points, with Bennette Atkins adding nine.
NIXYAAWII 70, UNION 54 — Baron Moses had 25 points and six assists, and the Golden Eagles improved to 7-0 in Old Oregon League play with a home win over the Bobcats.
Union (15-6, 5-2 OOL) was a step behind all night as the Golden Eagles (14-3) led 21-16 after the first quarter and 36-30 at the half. Nixyaawii then put together a 20-10 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Rylen Bronson added 17 points and five assists for Nixyaawii, while Symon Picard had 15 points, and Marcellus Scott seven rebounds and four steals.
Tee Ledbetter led the Bobcats with 23 points, while Chase Koshinsky added 13.
PILOT ROCK 64, PINE EAGLE 37 — Logan Ford had a game-high 19 points to lead the Rockets to a nonleague home win over the Spartans.
Pilot Rock led from start to finish, taking a 20-9 lead after the first quarter, and had a 36-14 advantage at the half.
The Rockets (7-12) outscored the Spartans 27-23 in the second half, but the image had already been done.
Efren Castro added 13 points for the Rockets, with Wesley Stillman adding 10.
Jared Barlow led the Spartans (1-20) with 10 points, while Jason Ludin added eight.
ECHO 70, GRISWOLD 41 — Dom Curiel had a game-high 23 points to lead the Cougars to an Old Oregon League home win over the Grizzlies.
Griswold was within 32-23 at the half, but Echo put together a 23-10 run in the third to put the game out of reach.
Kobe Harwood added 11 points for the Cougars (12-8 overall, 4-3 OOL), while Sam Wyse had seven.
Ethan Reeder led Griswold (2-15, 0-6) with 15 points, and Eli Boatright added eight.
Girls basketball
WESTON-MCEWEN 54, IRRIGON 21 — Kelsey Graham scored 15 points to lead the TigerScots to a Blue Mountain Conference road win over the Knights.
Weston-McEwen (19-4) had an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, then went on a 21-4 run in the second for a 32-12 lead. The TigerScots held the Knights scoreless in the fourth to improve to 6-2 in conference play.
Charlotte Hansell, Jayden Sparks and Addy Hall all added nine points each for the TigerScots.
Lizett Sanchez led the Knights (2-17, 0-7) with seven points.
ECHO 52, GRISWOLD 17 — The Cougars went on a 23-0 run in the first quarter, and celebrated Senior Night by handing the visiting Grizzlies an Old Oregon League loss.
“Four of our five seniors have been playing together since second and third grade,” Echo coach Brandi Russell said. “They had a great time subbing in and out together. At one point, they all switched positions. Our 5-foot guard jumped in the tip-off, and our center made a 3-point shot. Our forward played point guard, and the guards played under the basket.”
Despite the loss, Griswold coach Kevin Porter was pleased with his team’s effort.
“Echo is a quality team and they seemed to play inspired on their senior night,” Porter said. “However, my girls never quit working hard. Doing everything they could to take this opportunity against a good team to get better.”
Nevaeh Thew led the Cougars (15-4 overall, 7-0 OOL) with 13 points, while Mayela De La Fuente added 11, and Ally Brown eight.
Annika Holden led the Grizzlies (6-11, 0-6) with eight points, while Saige Jensen added six.
PINE EAGLE 36, PILOT ROCK 29 — The Rockets fell behind early and couldn’t catch up as the Spartans walked off the court with a nonleague road win.
Paedyn Bennett led the Rockets (4-13) with 14 points, while Ali Smith chipped in seven.
Miriam Tubbs had 10 points to lead the Spartans (6-13), while Ella Randall added nine.
BURNS 55, UMATILLA 24 — The Hilanders ran their win streak to four games with an Eastern Oregon League road win over the Vikings.
Ashley Wright led the way for Burns (14-4 overall, 4-2 EOL) with 23 points, including nine in the first quarter as the Hilanders got out to a 20-5 lead.
Alyiah led Umatilla (5-15, 0-5) with 10 points, while Rashayla McCallister added six.
UNION 57, NIXYAAWII 37 — Kaelyn Shoemaker poured in 23 points to lead the Bobcats to an Old Oregon League road win over the Golden Eagles.
Nixyaawii fell behind early, and trailed 30-21 at the half. The Golden Eagles pulled with 41-31 at the end of the third, but a 16-6 run by Union (16-5 overall, 6-1 OOL) put the game out of reach.
Ella Stewart led Nixyaawii (6-11, 3-4) with 20 points, while Annalise Watchman added nine.
