Commanders Considered Bill Belichick for HC Before Hiring Dan Quinn, per Report

The Washington Commanders decided on their new head coach on Thursday, choosing to hire Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn for the position. However, before making the decision, the Commanders considered many names for the position, including arguably the greatest coach of all time.

Washington’s front office discussed the possibility of hiring former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick instead of Quinn, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reports.

Belichick only interviewed for one team with a head coach opening, the Atlanta Falcons, after parting ways with the Patriots, but Atlanta opted to hire Raheem Morris instead. Now that every NFL team has a head coach for the 2024 season, Belichick is set to sit out of an NFL season for the first time in 50 years.

The 71-year-old Belichick seems to still want to coach, especially since he is just 27 wins away from becoming the NFL’s winningest head coach. However, Washington opted to hire Quinn instead, the former Falcons head coach who spent the past three years in Dallas.

While Belichick will not coach next year, he is sure to be a top candidate for teams looking for a new head coach next offseason. The veteran coach has six Super Bowl victories, the most among coaches in NFL history, and is currently third on the all-time wins list.
