The Washington Commanders are changing things up at offensive coordinator following the hire of Dan Quinn as head coach earlier this week.
On Sunday, it was reported that the Commanders are hiring former Arizona Cardinals and Texas Tech Red Raiders coach Kliff Kingsbury as the team’s new offensive coordinator.
Just last season the Commanders hired Eric Bieniemy as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, so it’s not immediately clear what’s in store for him following the addition of Kingsbury to the coaching staff.
Kingsbury served as Texas Tech’s coach from 2013-18 before joining the Cardinals, where he spent four seasons. Most recently, he served as an offensive analyst on Lincoln Riley’s USC Trojans’ staff, giving him a unique connection to projected top pick Caleb Williams, who happens to be a native of D.C. Washington owns the No. 2 selection in the 2024 NFL draft and could be in the mix for the USC quarterback.
Kingsbury, 44, had been widely reported as a top contender for the vacant Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive coordinator position on Antonio Pierce’s coaching staff, but he removed himself from contention a few days ago before taking the same role with the Commanders.
In 2023, Washington’s offense ranked 25th in the league with 19.4 points per game and ranked 24th with 312.8 total yards per game.
