From the editor’s desk: Hansell legacy is an example for all

- Sen. Bill Hansell on Feb. 21, 2024, in his office at the Capitol in Salem recounts how he was able to snag a ball at a Boston Red Sox game while attending a convention of the National Conference of State Legislatures in Boston. Sen. Clarence Nishihara, of Hawaii, gave his tickets for the game to Hansell. The seats were at ground level along right field, and a foul ball ricocheted off the overhead covering and ended up between Hansell’s feet. Without the gift of the tickets, Hansell would have the ball.

This week, we acknowledge the retirement of Oregon Sen. Bill Hansell, who dedicated 12 years of his life to serving the people of Senate District 29. Hansell’s decision to step back from politics marks the end of an era characterized by integrity, dedication and a deep commitment to public service.
Throughout his tenure, the Republican from Athena exemplified integrity, compassion and a steadfast commitment to the “three Cs” that guide his political decisions — conscience, constituents and caucus — has helped shaped policies positively influence our state’s landscape. His tireless efforts have yielded tangible improvements in the lives of countless individuals and communities in Northeast Oregon.
Hansell’s retirement underscores the changing landscape of politics, where individuals like him, who prioritize cooperation and compromise, are unfortunately becoming a rarity. Yet, his last short session, noted for its bipartisan attitude, must have delighted him, emphasizing the importance of working together for the greater good.
As we bid farewell to Hansell’s time in office, we express our gratitude for his years of service and his unwavering commitment to representing the best interests of Senate District 29. While he may be retiring from elected office, Hansell’s influence will continue to be felt in the policies and initiatives he helped to shape during his tenure.
We wish Hansell all the best and thank him for his dedication to making Oregon a better place for all.
