Hermiston FCCLA students celebrate success

HERMISTON — Students involved with Family, Career and Community Leaders of America from Hermiston High School celebrated successes during the Oregon FCCLA State Leadership Conference.

Adviser Angie Treadwell, who was selected as the Oregon FCCLA adviser of the year, said students from across the state gathered March 14-16 at the Holiday Inn Portland-Columbia Riverfront to test their leadership and career skills, compete in various events and engage in stimulating leadership sessions.

“Several students from the Hermiston FCCLA chapter showcased exceptional skills and earned well-deserved recognition at the conference,” Treadwell said in a press release.

In addition to receiving awards, several students also qualified for the FCCLA National Leadership Conference, which will be June 29 through July 3 in Seattle.

With a theme of “The Ultimate Journey,” Hermiston students, their awards and category, each qualified for nationals during the Oregon conference:

Kevin Mejia Romero, gold in Career Investigation, level 2; Italy Daltoso, gold in Focus on Children, level 3; Lillian Irving and Kyra Tolan, both silver in Food Innovations, level 3; Flor Silva Chavez, gold in Job Interview, level 3; Jeannine Heredia and Isay Osorio-Estrada, both silver in National Programs in Action, level 3; Robert Bartman, gold in Professional Presentation, level 3; Hope Melville and Hailey Melville, both silver in Sports Nutrition; Valarie Mendoza, silver in Chapter In Review Portfolio, level 3; and Gonzalo Govea, silver in FCCLA Chapter Website, level 3.

Other students, their awards and categories:

Denisse Murguia, silver in Career Investigation, level 3; Andrea Sanchez-Garavito, gold in Career Investigation, level 3; and Thalia Ramos Munoz, silver in Job Interview, level 3.

In addition, Treadwell said Isay Osorio-Estrada showcased leadership beyond competition and was elected as an FCCLA state officer as vice president of Membership.

“Students’ experiences in FCCLA equip them with valuable career-related skills, leadership insights, and a network of peers and mentors, setting the stage for continued growth and excellence,” the press release said.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America was initially founded as Future Homemakers of America in 1945 at a convention in Chicago. The organization’s goal is to prepare today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders in the home and workplace.

As the organization expanded, delegates voted to change its name in 1999. Bo Jackson, Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton are among the program’s alumni.
